Television shows are increasingly choosing real locations over erecting a set in Mumbai. Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and now, even Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana have become some of the preferred locations. The idea is to get as authentic as possible. As producer Sunjoy Wadhwa says, “It’s impossible to replicate the real essence of Varanasi anywhere in India because the place is so unique. The cultural and traditional fibre of a particular place cannot be recreated.” While the cost of shooting outside Mumbai may be more, it is far more convenient for the unit. Says a producer on condition of anonymity, “There is a huge union problem in Mumbai. For small issues sometimes, shoots get stalled.
